Tourism
Sierra Nevada is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing
possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the
Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its high temperatures and abundant sunshine.
At its foothills is found the city of Granada, and a little further south, Almería and Motril.
In summer, the Sierra Nevada offers outdoor tourism centered around hiking, mountain
biking, and cultural tours of the region's villages and landscapes. Visitors can
enjoy activities like guided hikes to peaks such as Mulhacén and Veleta, e-bike tours,
and exploring the Alpujarras mountains. The resort also provides summer programs,
natural pools, and cable car access, making it a versatile destination beyond the
winter ski season.
Alpujarra
The Alpujarra region is a natural and historical region in Andalusia, Spain, on
the south slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the adjacent valley. The terracing and the
irrigation of the hillsides (the "Alpujarra alta") was the work of local Spanish Muslim
people of Al-Andalus, who inhabited this area for hundreds of years after the initial
Moorish conquest of 711 AD. They also created villages on the hillsides in the style to
which they were accustomed in the mountains of North Africa: narrow, winding streets and
small flat-roofed houses.
